Machu Picchu Historic Sanctuary is an impressive Inca citadel placed on the side of a mountain. Its Quechua name means “Old Mountain”, but it is also known as **“the Lost City of the Incas”** since it remained hidden from the modern world until re-discovered by Hiram Bingham in 1911. In 1983, **UNESCO placed it on the World Cultural and Natural Heritage Lists**. In 2007 it became one of the new **”seven wonders of the world”**.
The city of Cuzco, the ancient capital of the Incan Empire, was placed on the **World Cultural Heritage List by UNESCO in 1983**. This magical city also has an exciting nightlife with cafes, restaurants, and bars for all tastes.
”Camino Inca” is the name given to the part of the vast network of trails built by the Incas that united the main administrative and religious centers of their empire. The trail that connects the city of Cuzco with **Machu Picchu** is the most popular to walk today and has earned the reputation of being one of the world’s best trekking destinations!
”The Sacred Valley of the Incas”** or ”Valle Sagrado de los Incas” is located in the Andes Mountains of Southeastern Peru. Just two hours from Ica, 50 square km of desert floor were covered centuries ago by vast drawings. These figures of mammals, insects and deities, discovered in 1927, are today called **”The Nazca Lines”.** Today they stand out as the most extraordinary legacy left by a culture that flourished in 300 BC. The Nazca Lines are a series of complex designs, some up to 300 meters long which can only be seen in their true dimension from the sky. However why these lines where made and how they were made remains a mystery.
Titicaca National Reserve** was created in 1978 in order to preserve the natural resources characteristic of Lake Titicaca and the highlands ecosystem. It today covers an area of 36.180 hectares.
Manu is the most luxuriant expression of life on the planet and the most pristine corner of the Amazon. It offers the visitor a brief insight into a world far removed from their own, a chance to discover life at its extreme and creatures of all descriptions. The Manu Reserve is situated in the southeast corner of Peru, in the province of Madre de Dios, and was established in 1977. It is today one of the largest reserves in South America and has been named a world **heritage site by UNESCO.
The Ballestas islands are located near the town of Paracas in the Pisco Province. The islands are made of rock formations and covers an area of approxometly 0.12 km². The Ballestas islands have become an important sanctuary for the marine life and here you can find over 150 different species of marine birds. As well as a huge colony of Sea lions!
Chan Chan is located in the Moche valley, facing the sea, halfway between the resort of Huanchaco and the city of Trujillo. It is the largest mud city in pre Hispanic- America and was named a **UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986**.
Chavin de Huantar was the capital of the Chavin culture. It is an archaeological site located in the District of Chavin de Huantar, province of Huari, Ancash department. It is located 462 kilometers northeast of Lima, Peru.
The region of Lambayeque is located on the coastal plain and combines arid zones, rich valleys, and dry forests. This territory was the cradle of the Mochicas, who lived here between the first and fourth centuries A.D. Which makes Lambayeque one of the most interesting archeological destinations in the country. Here you can for example find the famous royal tombs of Sipán discovered in 1987.
The citadel of Kuelap is an impressive stone fortress built by the **Chachapoyas culture** for over 2000 years ago. It is located in northern Peru standing on a ridge overlooking the Utcubamba Valley and is about 600 meters in length and 110 meters in width. The walls rise up to 19 meters in height. The citadel is believed to have taken about 200 years to complete. The main building is circular and has a very narrow entrance only letting through 1 person at a time. All for the purpose of defense.
The region of Ica is located in southern Peru in the dessert district. It is a region with lots of sand dunes, deserts, valleys, and sun. Due to its warm weather it is also a good agricultural zone and here they grow lots of cotton, grapes, olives, butter beans, asparagus and citrus fruits. The area is also famous for its many vineyards.
Iquitos county is the largest and most northern in Peru. The city lies imbedded in the Amazon Jungle in the Maynas Province next to a side arm of the Amazon River. It is surrounded by countless smaller rivers and canals making it rather difficult to reach. Since no roads leads here all communication have to be by air or by boat.
The region of Cajamarca is characterized by slight slopes and highlands relatively low in comparison to the rest of the Peruvian Andes.
The White Range (Cordillera Blanca) is located in the Peruvian Andes northeast of Lima in the region of Ancash. Throughout the entire region, you can see the most spectacular snow covered mountains, among them **Mount Huascaran** (6,768 ma.s.l.). Not only being the tallest peak in Peru Huascaran is also the highest tropical mountain in the world. Which makes this area perfect for adventure sports like white water rafting, mountain climbing, mountain biking, and trekking.
The **Lord of Sipan** was a warlord of the Moche people who was buried in the fourth century AD. In 1987 Peruvian archaeologist Walter Alva with his team discovered his tomb. It is located in the town of Sipan near the city of Chiclayo, on Peru's north coast. The find was considered one of the most important finds of the century. Since it marked an important milestone in the archeology of the Americas. Cause for the first time a royal tomb, of a Peruvian civilization before the Incas, was found intact and unspoiled.
The desert and the sea come together in spectacular fashion in Paracas just a few hours south of the city of Lima. The cliffs that fringe the beaches are teeming with life: millions of birds live here year-round, and thousands of others fly from the Northern Hemisphere and from further south, ranging from guano birds to Humboldt penguins.
Mancora is a small fishing village located in the province Talara, in northern Peru, near Tumbes. In the small village life starts early as fishermen get up at 3 am to begin the day. Then life goes on at a slow and relaxing pace where you can enjoy the beautiful beaches and turquoise waters until the amazing sunset. After that you can enjoy a seafood dinner at one of the village many restaurants or dance the night away at the clubs.
Pacaya Samiria Natural Reserve** was established in 1982 and is located in north eastern Peru. It's name comes from the two rivers that run through it. The reserve is also often called **”The forest of Mirrors”** cause the forest and the sky are reflected so clearly in the dark waters of its rivers. The reserve is the second largest protected natural area in Peru. It's made up of a vast complex of alluvial terraces and flood plains where there are freshwater lakes, ponds and seasonally flooded forested wetlands.
The region of La Libertad has a very variate landscape reaching from the coast line, though the highlands (Andes) to the upper jungle (The Amazon Rain Forest). The coast area enjoys beaches and fertile valleys that are very important to the national agricultural production. The area was inhabited by two important, ancient Peruvian civilizations, the **Mochica and the Chimú,** and has lots of archeological sites.
The region of the Amazon is famous for its cloud forests. The area has an intense humidity which favors the growth of plants like orchids and bromeliads. As well as the spreading of animals like the spectacled bear and the Andean cock of the rock.
Callao is the largest and most important port in Peru. It is located west of Lima city and is part of the Lima Metropolitan Area. Callao was founded in 1537, just two years after Lima, and soon became the main port for Spanish commerce in the Pacific.
Enjoying only a fraction of the fame and publicity of its neighbor Machu Picchu the Inca city of Choquequirao is nevertheless equally impressive.
This archaeological site, only now being excavated and explored and has been extracted from the dense jungle that had consumed it and sits on a plain known as ‘Espiritu Pampa’ – the plain of ghosts.
Huacachina Oasis is located in the Ica region in Southern Peru and is often called ”The Oasis of America.” It is surrounded by desert and sand dunes. However the vegetation around the lagoon is very rich and consists of palms, eucalyptus and typical Guaranga trees.
