By Peru to gain 4,300 kilometers of international waters in agreement with Ecuado

(05/07/2011)Foreign Minister Jose Garcia Belaunde confirmed that Peru will get an additional 4,300 kilometers of international waters, thanks to the new maritime border agreement with Ecuador, Andina reports.

"It's a project that we will work on next week. It is a bill that amends the law of baselines in the far north, in order for the borders of Ecuador and Peru to reach the same point."

"And that will allow us to turn international waters into inland waters, where Peru will exercise sovereignty as if they were part of its territory," he said.

The benefit to Peru does not affect the maritime territory of Ecuador, Belaunde confirmed.

He made these explanations to clarify the wrong versions that claimed that such additional kilometers of international waters were obtained at Ecuador's expense.
