The Inca Trail offers the traveller a wonderful combination of scenery including magnificent mountains, fauna and flora, subtropical vegetation and the amazing Inca ruins.

Over 220 species of orchid have been found in the Machupicchu Historic Sanctuary, as well as many species of birds, animals and reptiles.

In order to undertake this trail you need to have a reasonable level of fitness – age does not matter! The most important factor is acclimatising to the altitude. The maximum height above sea level along the trail is 4,200m, so we suggest that you spend at least 2 days in Cusco before attempting to walk the trail. During this time you can explore the wonderful city which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We can offer you many other shorts tours, which would be ideal for exploring in and around the City for one or two days.

ITINERARY 

Day 1 : Cusco (3,350m) – Km82 (2,800m) – Wayllabamba (3,000m)

Our guide will pick you up from your hotel and drive to the start of the trail takes 2 hours taking you through the Sacred Valley to Ollantaytambo where we stop to take a break and have a look at the typical local market and where you can buy your last provisions for the trip if you forgot to in Cusco. We continue for another hour and arrive at Km82, the start of the trail. We have breakfast whilst enjoying the view of Veronica Snow Mountain (5,720m). We then commence walking for about 3 hours, whereafter we take lunch close to Llactapata Ruins and then continue our trek through lush farmland and woodlands to our first camp at Wayllabamba.

After breakfast, we begin to walk the toughest part of the trail. After 3 hours walking we finally reach the highest point in the Inca Trail, Warmiwañusca, or more commonly known as Dead Woman’s Pass (4,200m), where you have a beautiful panoramic view of the area. After lunch we continue walking down to Pacaymayo where we set up camp and have a nutritious dinner.

Inca Trail to Machu Picchu; Click to enlarge After breakfast we start the ascent towards the second most important pass on the trail which lies at 4,000m. There will be a guided tour at the Inca Ruins of Runkurakay and the Inca citadel of Sayacmarca. We continue trekking towards Puya Patamarka (Cloud-level town), another important archaeological monument, where lunch will be served. After a short break we continue walking to Wiñay Huayna (Forever Young), a beautiful Inca construction, and receive a guided tour. We camp near to the ruins and have well deserved nutritious dinner.

A very early start after breakfast in order that we can arrive in time for sunrise at Machupicchu. We walk for about an hour through the forest before arriving at the Inti Punku (the Sun Gate), where we will have our first inspiring view of Machupicchu. We admire the view before setting off for the short walk into the ruins. There will be a 2 hour fully guided tour around the ruins, visiting the main sites and monuments. After the tour you will have free time to wander around and explore by yourself. We drive by bus down to the town of Aguas Calientes for lunch (not included). In the afternoon we take the train back to Cusco, where you will be transferred back to your hotel. Time for us to go and explore the nightlife of Cusco, dance some salsa and share Cusqueña beer!

What should you Bring

  • Original Passport to register on the Inca Trail and Trains
  • A backpack with a change of clothes for the whole period of the trek
  • Rain jacket or poncho (plastic ponchos can be purchased in Cusco)
  • Strong footwear, ideally trekking or sport shoes
  • Warm clothes, including jacket, fleece and sweaters
  • Sleeping bag (it can be hired at our agency for $12 / $15 depending on quality required for the entire trek)
  • Wet-Wipes to freshen up
  • Flashlight and batteries
  • Hat or cap to protect you from the sun, rain or cold
  • Sun block / Insect repellent / Toilet paper
  • Snacks: biscuits, energy bars, chocolate, etc.
  • Water bottle and sterilising tablets (e.g. Micropur)
  • Small towel and Swimsuit for hot springs
  • Personal medical kit (although we do have our own first aid kit)

IMPORTANT!!  PERSONAL PORTERS
It is important to note that we include 7kg personal luggage allowance into our Package.  We find that the majority of our clients require this service as it helps lighten the load and you will enjoy your experience with us much more! 

If you feel that you require more than the 7kg allowance then you need to add $50 onto the above costing and we will give you an additional 7kg luggage allowance ( total of a full porter with a 14 kilos in total ).  Please notify us if you do require additional porterage as we need to know at the time we book your tour and before we confirm the tour to you.

Our Porters carry a maximum load of 20kg, but we kindly ask you to not exceed your 7kg stated allowance as we need to adhere to the INC regulations and more importantly not damage the health and welfare of our Porters!

PRIVATE SERVICE
If you would like your group to be "closed", ie no other persons added to it, then this is possible to arrange for an extra $15 per person. With this service you are given more flexibility to walk at your own pace, you will have the guide to yourselves and an all round more personal service! At the time of making your reservation kindly indicate to us that you would prefer this option.

STUDENTS
If you have a valid ISIC Student Card you are entitled to $30.00 discount. When making your booking please send us a scanned in version of your Student Card to entitle you to the discount.

Due to regulations brought in by the Instituto Nacional de Cultura in 2002, the Inca Trail (4 or 2 days) is limited to 500 people per day, including Guides, Porters and Cooks. It is therefore necessary to book well in advance to guarantee a place on the date you want to commence the Trail. For Inca Trail treks in the high season (June, July, August and September) it is essential to book at least 3-4 months ahead.
