(11/10/2010)Minister of Labor, Manuela García, announced Peru’s minimum salary to be increased from 550 to 600 soles ($216), informed RPP.
The new salary was approved by the Council of Ministers this morning.
It will be enforced starting 1 December (30 soles), and 1 February, 2011 (20 soles).
Despite criticism that tagged the decision as “populist”, the minister said the raise was decided after analyzing the economic growth Peru has gone through, and with a clear purpose to protect the consuming capacity of the workers.
García explained that the workers’ unions stepped out of the National Labor Council (Consejo Nacional de Trabajo) because they requested a raise of 27 soles during the international economic crisis.
The minister said that the request would have been a mistake back then, especially for small and medium-sized businesses.
“With our current economic growth there can’t be businesses unable to afford this raise,” she said.
She also requested all companies to respect this new deal, and warned that her office will continue to monitor and punish companies and businesses that don’t comply with the law.
