Strikers continue protests against Tía María mining project in Southern Peru

(11/23/2010)Around 150 members of the Peruvian National Police used tear gas to break a blockade on the Panamerican Higway that started Monday by 300 protesters on strike, reported El Comercio.

Most of the protesters are from Chucarapi and Cocachacra, small towns in Arequipa, against the Tía María copper-mining project.

The strikers responded throwing rocks to the police forces.

Yesterday, at least 18 people were arrested and nice were injured in the violent claseh between police members, strikers, and even journalists who were hit by rocks on the head.

A group of protester blocked a segment of the Panamerican Highway near Chucarapi and set a bus on fire.

El Comercio’s correspondent, Carlos Zanabria, reported that another group of strikers sacked the offices of the Pro Cobre Civil Association, owned by Southern Peru mining company.
