The Apurimac River is the source of the world´s largest River system, the Amazon River, it rises from glacier melt water of the ridge of nevado Mismi, at 5597 meters high mountain in Arequipa Province Southern Peru. In 1971 National Geographic expedition identified Nevado Mismi as the source of the Amazon River. It flows northwest past from Cusco in narrow gorges of up to 3000 m twice as deep the Grand Canyon in USA, in the way is interrupted by water falls, small affluents, and hundreds of rapids.

The Urubamba river runs from the high Andean ranges down through the Sacred Valley of the Incas, past Machupicchu and into the jungle. It has some exciting white water depending on the section of the river being done and the time of the year. One of our most popular rafting sections during the season is the "Cusipata" section of the river on the Upper Urubamba. There are good class IIl rapids and the water is not contaminated, as unfortunately the Huambutio and Ollantaytambo section of the river are.
